a Hawaii Trip Of a Lifetime Without Paying an Arm and a Leg

Posted by Jody Wong Comments (0)

There are loads of books offering detailed information about how to save money on Hawaii vacations. But the sum of everything said in all those books comes down to three simple things. It will be all about cutting costs for travel, meals and lodging.

Advance planning can easily bring down the overall cost of the trip by 25% to 60%. Given sufficient time, airfare alerts will provide savings. Be on the lookout for package deals and daily deals for at least 6 months prior to the trip. It will provide huge savings on airfare, attraction tickets, hotel room rates and even vacation packages.

Obviously the choice of island for a Hawaiian vacation matters a lot. Everybody wants to see Waikiki Beach, so Oahu is pretty popular and has plenty of budget hotels. Of course, there’s a flip side since higher occupancy pushes up rates. But generally speaking, there are so many budget properties that cheapskates consistently manage to find cheaper digs in Oahu than on any other island.

Of course, many travelers may feel they have to visit all the other well-known islands too, including Maui, Kauai and Big Island. In that case, cruises might actually be cheaper than hopping around between islands and booking hotels at each place. Booking a condo instead of a hotel room will be a lot cheaper and provide extra sleeping space, kitchens, free parking, etc.

It is possible to reduce the travel and lodging costs even more by choosing less popular options. For example, travel during off-season when the kids are in school. Family travelers with kids can get their own discounts by choosing deals where the kids fly free, eat free and sleep free along with their paying parents.

Choosing to stay away from the beach will cut back on the lodging budget some more. Visitors are able to enjoy the sand, sun and surf on the beaches all day and all night long. What difference does it make if the ocean is not in sight for a couple of hours before bed and after getting up in the morning?

Meals are a decidedly more complicated issue. Not everyone can be expected to eat like a local or what they call a Kama’aina over here. If a tourist starts enjoying spam musubi or plate lunches, that counts as a lot of money saved on meals. It can be deducted from the cost of the trip, or spent on a shopaholic spree at the Ala Moana Center.

The pros and cons are pretty simple. An upscale restaurant gives temporary pleasure while the colorful Aloha dresses and shirts will be a memory for a long time to come. Let’s hope this brief guide on how to save money on Hawaii vacations comes in handy.

Use the Verizon fios promo codes today and you will start getting a discount on your broadband connection every month. If you save the difference, then that Hawaii trip will become a reality eventually.

Night Time Trolling for Striped Bass

Posted by Captain Ryan Collins Comments (0)

There are a number of significant differences between trolling the tube and worm at night versus trolling the tube and worm in the day.

Remember that listed below are just generalities-there are usually quite a few exclusions to these “rules.” Yet, having an idea of how striped bass typically act during the night can help you locate, and hook more and bigger stripers. Trolling for striped bass through the night often outproduces trolling for striped bass during day light.

Typically, I’ve found that bass stay closer to the surface at night. During the night I find myself trolling three colors in areas in which I troll 6 colors through the day. Even if the striped bass aren’t hunting, they seem to stick closer to the surface after it gets dark. Noticing striped bass from 10-20 ft deep is much more common in the evening rather than marking striped bass at 25-40 ft .-at least inside the regions I normally fish. I’d consider it be rather uncommon to find stripers holding deep after dark in Cape Cod Bay.

I’ve realized that the bulk of the striper population inside a particular region proceeds inside the same general direction through the entire course of an evening. During the past year it was not uncommon for us to find several schools of striped bass inside twenty five ft . of water right before the sun set. When it became darker, these schools of bass slowly and gradually trudged offshore. By 11PM most of the striped bass nearby could be located holding in 60-70 feet of h2o. These fish would likely spend the remainder of the overnight residing in deeper water in a somewhat sedentary condition, then gradually trudge once again in the direction of shore when the sun rose. These bass proved very hard to catch when they were holding offshore. However when in transit, they proved much easier to entice. Either way being able to stay with the bulk of the striped bass biomass throughout the course of a trip will most certainly increase your success rate.

Certainly this pattern of actions can change rapidly and become very different. Under certain weather conditions the development can be played in reverse. One example is this past autumn, when the wind blew hard towards the shore, the stripers would push up snug towards the beachfront in just ten ft of water as the night evolved-as contrasted to going out to deep water. Then the next evening, if the breeze altered, the stripers would return back to their past behaviors. The bass seemed to decide on a pattern of striped bass behavior based on wind direction.

The way stripers behave within the locations you fish could differ significantly than the ways that bass behave where I fish. The essential idea to know is that it is often probable to pre-plan a pattern of striper habits in your area that will help you find and remain with large schools of bass as the night progresses.

Best of luck in your night striped bass trolling endeavors!

Going On A Backpacking Trip? Here Are 10 Essential Tips To Remember

Posted by Rebecca Taylor Comments (0)

There are backpacking trips that included rain, snow, lightning, rockslides, altitude sickness, and twenty-mile days – all in a summer weekend. Wilderness trips can be dangerous, but you can make then less so, by having the following ten essentials in your backpack.

Knowledge. What good is a compass if you have no idea how to use it? Play with matches if your fire-making skills are shaky. Learning what to do when you see a bear is important. Read a little, practice a little – knowledge is more likely to save you than gadgets.

Map and compass. Since that’s the way you need to use them, these should be together.

Matches and lighter. Try bringing both or waterproof matches and a fire starter of some sort. If you have two ways to start a fire, then it is much safer.

First aid kit. Buy a pre-packaged one or build your own. Make sure it has pain relievers, bandages, disinfectant, and notes on basic first aid procedures.

Foot care. Moleskin and maybe a pin is what your first aid kit will need to treat blisters. It’s important for your feet to be well cared for when you are hiking miles from the nearest road.

Water purification. Even though a filter works, they tend to clog and break so often that you should have a small bottle of iodine tablets or other water purification as back up.

Rainwear. Hypothermia is considered as one of the biggest killers in the woods and it often starts when you get wet. Try to stay dry.

Shelter. This can be a tent, tarp or bivy sack. Just be sure you know how to use it.

Sleeping bag. Even though down bags are warmest for their weight, you need to be sure that you know how to keep it dry or bring a synthetic bag.

Specific trip items. Bring insect repellent when you go on backpacking trips in Michigan in May. In June in Arizona, bring sunblock. What you need to do is think about the specific conditions for the time and place of your trip.

Making your own list is a must if you take regular backpacking trips. It’s no fun when a friend tells us ten miles down the trail that he’s allergic to bees and forgot his medicine. A little planning means less worries, and a better trip.

Half of all kids have stopped climbing trees, and 17 percent have been told that they can’t play tag or chase. Even hide-and-seek has been deemed dangerous. And that dreaded stick…”will put out someone’s eye”. It is easy to blame technology for the decline in outdoor play, but it may well be mom and dad. Adrian Voce of Play England says ‘Children are not being allowed many of the freedoms that were taken for granted when we were children,’ ‘They are not enjoying the opportunities to play outside that most people would have thought of as normal when they were growing up.’ According to the Guardian, “Voce argued that it was becoming a ‘social norm’ for younger children to be allowed out only when accompanied by an adult. ‘Logistically that is very difficult for parents to manage because of the time pressures on normal family life,’ he said. ‘If you don’t want your children to play out alone and you have not got the time to take them out then they will spend more time on the computer.’ The Play England study quotes a number of play providers who highlight the benefits to children of taking risks. ‘Risk-taking increases the resilience of children,’ said one. ‘It helps them make judgments,’ said another. We as parents want to play it safe and we need to rethink safety vs adventure. The research also lists examples of risky play that should be encouraged including fire-building, den-making, water sports, paint-balling, boxing and climbing trees. Summer camp provides an excellent opportunity for children to get outside take risks and play, all while still while being supervised by concerned young adults…we call counselors.
